Events and Races - August 2002

08/01-04/02 - NORBA NCS #4 Durango
Go back to the roots. Durango hosted the first mountain biking world championships in 1990 where Ned Overend and Juli Furtado proudly earned the first mtb rainbow stripes. Durango could use a little lovin' after all the fires and stuff too. Shelly and Alex will be there, and word is that Petra will be there racing for Team Trek.

08/03/02 - Santa Cruz Mountains Challenge
100 miles and 10,000 feet of climbing. But fear not, there are bail out
options. This little tidbit from the host website makes the ride sound even more interesting: "This is no course for riders who fear The Downhill."

08/03/02 - Tour De Granite
Mountain bike race held somewhere near Shaver Lake. Course looks promising and they promise that "really cool stuff will be awarded in all categories."

08/04/02 - Leland Meadows Mountain Bike Race
When Velo Promo hits the dirt it's all low key and fun. Don’t know anything about this race except that its held somewhere in Pinecrest.

08/04/02 - Trail Work at Wilder Ranch
Have you done your annual trail work yet? Feeling guilty? Here’s another opportunity to help.

08/10/02 - NCNCA Road Race Championships
Thanks to the opening of some of the roads used in the old course, this race no longer makes the long climb up "Barfboy." Instead you have to race up the "wall" in this funky figure-eight course. But Bear jerseys are on the line, so expect the competition to be tough.

08/11/02 - Howell Mountain Challenge
Ahhhh..riding in Angwin. Making a smaller loop, this course includes all the fun parts of the Napa Valley Dirt Classic, but avoids that icky climb out. If you enjoy tight singletrack that winds back and forth through the trees, you have to come out and race this.

08/11/02 - Timpani Criterium
Nice wide four corner crit, with races just for categories 3, 4 and 5. And yes, they usually have Timpani drummers out there to motivate the racers.

08/17/02 - Corral Hollow Road Race
1st Race in the prestigious Cal Cup Competition. I like to refer to this race as "Corral Hell." One time up the climb in this race and you will know why. Bring your 25…hell, bring your 27!

08/18/02 - Suisun Harbor Criterium
The Cal Cup fun continues with this criterium. Jenny Eyerman won this last year. She got her start at our local Tuesday night crit where she showed up with an old rusty bike and a crooked helmet. She eventually went on to win Collegiate Nationals.

08/24/02 - Winters Road Race
Cal Cup race. Where in the hell is Winters?

08/25/02 - Cal Cup Time Trial
They're adding a time trial to this series? Oh my.

08/24-25/02 - 24 Hours of Tahoe
Our friends at White Brothers are sponsors of this event and really, really want us to race this...

08/25/02 - CA State MTB Race #5 – Snow Summit
Race #5 in the California State Championships takes us back down to Big Bear. Several Velo Bellas are vying for the titles in this series, so we may make the long trek south for this one.

08/25/02 - Tour of Napa Valley
Could there be anything more pleasant than riding around Napa Valley on a bicycle? I don’t think so.

08/27 - 09/01/02 - UCI World Masters MTB Championships
Our own Alan Coats won a bronze medal last year. Joining Alan this year will be Shelly and Sabine (lucky Alan!) Besides the great racing action, Bromont is a beautiful place to ride. Can’t wait!

08/31/02 - San Ardo Road Race
Cal Cup points on the line for the flatlanders. How flat is this race? It's so flat that even Sabine won it one year!

Various Dates Throughout August -
NCNCA District Track Championships

Championships on the line in several Track disciplines throughout the month of August.
