04/29/02 - CA State MTB Series - Velo Bella is HOT!
Although the majority of the California State MTB series takes place in Southern California, Velo Bella is determined to make a showing of what the NorCal girls can do. (Okay, geographically we're Central Coast, but spiritually we're NorCal). The series is comprised of 7 races with the best 5 counting towards series points. Velo Bella has had wins and podiums at all three races run so far. Shelly Whisenhant won the Sagebrush Expert event and then upgraded to pro just in time to win the Pro event at Bonelli Park. Our local Petra Rocha, racing for Team Trek, is leading the series for Pro Women. Dana Lookadoo is on a roll with wins at Sea Otter and Bonelli Park in the Sport class. Sabine Dukes managed to squeak in a podium 3rd place in the expert class at Bonelli. Other Velo Bellas with series points include Elizabeth Caraker, Janet Lowery, Alyson Lowery and Brenda Cranford. The next event is in Big Bear on June 30th. Keep an eye on the results and race reports for updates.

04/24/02 - Bike Advocacy Success!
Thanks to the concerns of many, a dangerous route for bikes will get relief. The Monterey Coastal Trail currently stops at the City of Castroville. Cyclists who wanted to continue on to Santa Cruz County had to either brave the tourists, trucks and speeding commuters of Highway 1, or make the dangerous crossing over 156 to get to Elkhorn Slough. Now there will be a bike path/route that connects Castroville to Elkhorn Slough. Hurray!! Estimated to be completed before the end of 2003!!

The Velo Club of Monterey is extremely active in local bike advocacy efforts and has worked at creating beneficial relationships with various municipal agencies. If you are interested in supporting such efforts, please join the Velo Club of Monterey and become part of the advocacy crew.

Re: Hwy 156 @ Castroville:
Monterey County is planning the "Castroville/Elkhorn Road Bicycle/Pedestrian Path and Bridge Project," which will install a Class I/II bike route through the town of Castroville, a Class I bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks, a Class I on Castroville Blvd., and a Class III on Elkhorn Road to the Elkhorn Slough Sanctuary. It's in the environmental phase right now and will go into construction next year. It's in the bike plan as "Castroville Blvd," estimated total cost $2.5 million.

04/18/02 - Velo Bella is on TRACK
Velo Bella is proud to have as its members a team of track racers based in Atlanta, GA. These women have been tearing up the track for a few years and are currently competing in the Master's Women circuit. Check out their profiles (soon to be online at www.velobella.org) and follow their local results. Stay tuned for updates on their season. These were the ladies that encouraged us to order skinsuits, now maybe they will encourage us and other female cyclists to give the track a try.

04/08/02 - Velo Bella and Specialized Bicycles held Women's Cycling Product Focus Group
Fourteen Velo Bellas attended a focus group sponsored by Kathleen Loebs from Specialized Bicycles. Specialized is pursuing the female cyclist market and is interested in our opinions on a variety of products. All aspects of cycling were well represented in the meeting. We chatted about everything from gloves to shoes to shorts to saddles and even bicycle frames. Several women went home with prototype products to test provide their opinions to Specialized after a two-week testing period. The rest of us went home with some really cool Specialized swag!

04/02/02 - Outdoor Life Network Bike Season Begins

OLN Adventure TV broadcasts a bunch of bike stuff every Thursday evening throughout Spring, Summer and early Fall. OLN Rules. I never thought I could watch a cycling event such as Paris-Roubaix live in the US. But I can. OLN will also be broadcasting the Giro, Tour and Vuelta live. In addition they provide coverage of other cycling events such as Sea Otter, Road and MTB World Cups, MTB Nationals and Spring Classics. Viva Sherwin, Phil and Bob!! They also do some hokey Gear Guide and Bicycle Guide shows, but its about bikes and its on TV so even that stuff is fun to watch. Check out the 2002 Cycling Season Schedule. And if you are as big as fan of OLN's cycling coverage as I am, you may want to check out this great listing of Duffield's ramblings and their meanings. Remember Steve Martin's song, "Rambling Man?"
